Prohibition

The era of prohibition, 1920-33, was unique in Louisiana because of the number of functioning breweries throughout the period.  The breweries that stayed open throughout prohibition were forced to brew Near Beer, beer that contained less than 0.5% AVB. Although many breweries stayed open during prohibition, they were forced to change their names so that they were able to keep brewing. Some examples of these name changes include:

  • Jackson Brewery changed to Jackson Pure Product.
  • Union brewery, located on North Robinson and Press Street, became Union Beverage Company.
  • Dixie Brewery changed to Dixie Brewing Company
